Dr. Hamdullah Mohib, Afghanistan’s Ambassador to the USA visited Des Moines at the invitation of the Des Moines Foreign Relations Committee. Social Studies Dept. chair, Canada Snyder, working with Tamara Elwell, created an opportunity for 300 students to ask questions and listen to this global leader. Fez Zafar is not only a freshman at Roosevelt and Academy, he’s a budding filmmaker. And one of his short films, “Road to Unity,” was honored last weekend at the White House Film Festival. Students in Marcketti’s AMPS class were challenged by Dr. Spellerberg and his students at Simpson to develop a mathematical model for predicting the best location for a new satellite Center for Disabilities and Development Clinic for children with Down’s Syndrome balancing the medical goals of the clinic, driving times for families, and the building and overhead costs for opening the clinic. One hundred sixty-seven of the DMPS students named AP scholars for 2016 attended some classes at Central Academy. Students from all five comprehensive high schools, have earned Advanced Placement Scholar honors from the College Board, the second most ever recognized at Iowa’s largest school district. Twenty students earned National AP Scholar recognition, all of them attended Academy. Click headline for story.

Congratulations to Roosevelt seniors Maeve Greising, Shivani Kumaresan, Abbott LaPrade, Jade Miller, Aidan Palmer and Jack Romp on being chosen Semi-Finalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship competition, placing them among the top young scholars in the state and nation. The students, who also attend Central Academy, were selected based on their strong performance on the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) test taken last year.

Academy After Hours is held on most Tuesdays from 2:30 – 4:30. Popcorn, music, and mentoring sessions teach students critical skills for forming and functioning in study groups.
