8th Grade Gov’t students conducted a mock election with TV ads, flyers, political platforms, campaign managers and a full out debate of the issues modeled on the national presidential election. Students Promoting Emotional Awareness & Kidpowerment (SPEAK) is an Academy pilot program aiming to support students emotionally through education, direct support and by fighting the stigma of mental illness. Dr. Hamdullah Mohib, Afghanistan’s Ambassador to the USA visited Des Moines at the invitation of the Des Moines Foreign Relations Committee. Social Studies Dept. chair, Canada Snyder, working with Tamara Elwell, created an opportunity for 300 students to ask questions and listen to this global leader. Fez Zafar is not only a freshman at Roosevelt and Academy, he’s a budding filmmaker. And one of his short films, “Road to Unity,” was honored last weekend at the White House Film Festival.
