Service Opportunity
Dear Students and Families of Central Academy,
One of our students is assisting with organizing a service opportunity. Below is her message regarding the Fort Des Moines Week of Remembrance. I’m sharing this message with you in support of student leadership and volunteerism.

Good afternoon,
Yesterday, the President of the United States of America issued a proclamation recognizing tomorrow September 11, 2024, as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. I and the Fort Des Moines Museum and Education Center believe it is extremely important for young people like me, who were not born when the original events of 9/11 occurred, to know this pivotal history and to observe it by serving and remembering.
As a student at Roosevelt High School, I am encouraging my fellow DMPS students to write a letter to a veteran and consider donating some amount of money to be used to provide food to fellow members of our community. I believe that we as young people can amaze ourselves on how we can volunteer and serve our neighbors. I hope that the impact of 9 cents, 11 cents, or whatever you choose to donate will be realized as we all choose to be more engaged in our community.
We will be collecting letters from ANY student at ANY school. We hope to have donation containers in each of the schools by the end of the week and we will also be taking donations at Fort Des Moines Museum this Saturday from 10am-6pm. The Museum is located at 75 East Army Post Road.
I close this email with a quote from today’s proclamation:
“Over the last 23 years, what was destroyed, we have repaired. What was threatened, we have fortified. What was attacked — the indomitable American spirit — prevailed. That is who we are. That is the soul of our Nation. There is nothing we cannot accomplish when we defend with all our hearts that which makes us unique in the world: our democracy. That is what the heroes and patriots of 9/11 did. And that is what we must all continue to do today.”
Thank you,
Hadley Harvey
