Throwing Classes During Virtual Waiver Period

Dear Central Academy Throwing students and families,

I hope this email finds you well.

The Iowa Department of Education approved Des Moines Public School’s waiver for virtual learning from November 16 – 30.  This decision is an effort to keep our students, families, and faculty safe as our community positivity rate in Polk county continues to rapidly increase.

You are enrolled in our in-person Throwing class that meets once a week at Central Academy.  So, here is our plan for transitioning our Throwing classes to virtual learning during the waiver period.

THIS WEEK:
Our Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday classes will meet in person as scheduled this week.  We will check out materials and supplies for students to work from home during the waiver period. (If you did not or cannot take the materials during class, you can come by on Thursday or Friday between 8 – 4 to pick up the materials from our lobby) < This will definitely include all Monday students, as they will not get the opportunity to meet in person before the waiver period begins.

Advanced and Intermediate potters may check out a throwing wheel to take home.  Those students who do not want to work on the wheel at home (no way to transport, no space to house the wheel, or some other reason) may have an alternate assignment with the clay and tools.  Just contact Ms. Green at dara.green@dmschools.org

Beginning potters will be issued the clay and tools they will need to complete hand building assignments from home.

Students who were scheduled to attend their first Throwing class on Monday, will need to come on Thursday or Friday this week to pick up their materials.

NOV. 16 – 30:
Students will be added to a Teams class to meet with Ms. Green for instruction and feedback.  She will send you invites to join her for real time, virtual classes based on your level (Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced) during period 2.  She will provide additional instructional resources, videos, and assignments through Canvas that you will reference as you work on your assignments at home.

  • Beginning potters originally assigned to Monday and Tuesday in person will meet virtually- MONDAY from 10-11:30.
  • Beginning potters originally assigned to Thursday and Friday in person will meet virtually- TUESDAY from 10-11:30.
  • All Intermediates will meet virtually- THURSDAY from 10-11:30.
  • All Advanced students will meet virtually- Fridays from 10-11:30

Since this is the start of Term 2, you may also choose to drop the course with no penalty and have a release time.  Please contact Kris Hilton if you want to drop the course this semester.  We would do our best to get you in the class next school year.
