Central Academy Hunger Banquet

Central Academy Hunger Banquet

On Tuesday, February 5th the Central Academy Students Against Hunger Club put on an Oxfam Hunger Banquet in the Central Campus Cafeteria. An Oxfam Hunger Banquet is an event meant to raise awareness about world hunger. Attendees drew tickets as they came in, putting them in one of three income groups. They got dinners according to which income group they were assigned to, the high-income group received a dinner of pasta, salad and bread, the middle-income group received rice and beans, and the low-income group got only rice. The groups sat together, at a table, in chairs, and on the floor, illustrating the small number of people in the upper class and middle class groups.

Madi Holmes and Rivkah Gardner-Frolick led the planning and were assisted by Henry Fender, Luke Sheeley, Katelyn Stevens, Oliver Shimp, Eva Jensen, and Arin Leopold. The Chemistry and AP Environmental Science teacher at Central Academy, Scott Schoneberg, was supervisor. Over 60 students attended this event and over two hundred dollars were raised to benefit Oxfam. Students learned about hunger in Iowa from speaker Catherine Swoboda of the World Food Prize, and about world hunger from student speaker Sam Bates-Norum. Attendees dined on food donated by Gateway Market and Central Campus Culinary Arts. After eating, students shared their reflections about their dinner and hunger in general. The first ever Central Academy Hunger Banquet was a huge success and the Central Academy Students Against Hunger Club is looking forward to putting on more events to raise awareness about hunger in Iowa and the World.
