Big Winners in International Mathematical Modeling Contests!

FINALIST TEAM IN THE USA REGIONAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL MATHEMATICAL MODELING CONTEST

We have very exciting results from the USA Regional of the International Mathematical Modeling Contest [LINK]:

FINALIST status was achieved by the Central Academy team of Louise Bequeath ’19, Jimmy Le ’18, Luke Whitman ’18, and Ben Wonderlin ’19.  A list of results is attached, the detailed problem statement is here  and the paper produced by this team is attached if you would like to read the result of their work (The “user-friendly” memo is on pages 22-23).  In short, they were tasked with developing a mathematical model to rank hospitals and, subsequently, producing a short “user-friendly” memo that a person without much mathematical expertise can you to choose a hospital.  All of this had to be completed in less the five days.

Only teams that achieved Meritorious Distinction or higher on the 2017 HiMCM (High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling) were allowed to attempt the IMMC.  This marks the second year in a row that a Central Academy team has earned FINALIST status placing them among the top dozen or so modeling teams in the U.S..  Last year’s team was comprised of Maeve Greising ’17, Evan Hilton ’19, and Kevin Li ’18.

$1,000 PRIZE WINNING TEAM IN THE MATHWORKS MATH MODELING CHALLENGE

Out of 913 teams competing in the Mathworks Math Modeling Challenge, Honorable Mention and a $1,000 prize was earned by the Central Academy team of Louise Bequeath ’19, Jimmy Le ’18, Kevin Li ’18, Luke Whitman ’18, and Ben Wonderlin ’19.  This results placed them in the top 34 of competing teams.  The team had only 14 hours to utilize mathematical modeling to analyze the costs and benefits of repurposing squandered food and determine strategies for communities to adopt in order to assist their food-challenged populations.  The problem can be read in its entirety here and a winning teams list can be found here.

HiMCM RESULTS INCLUDE 2 OF THE TOP 38 TEAMS IN THE U.S.

The two Central Academy teams that participated in the IMMC earned Finalist recognition on the fall 2017 HiMCM (High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling) placing them among the top 38 U.S. teams.  Results can be found here.

Additionally, two other Central Academy teams earned Honorable Mention recognition.  Those teams were comprised of (1)  Nyah Davis ’18, Emily Larson ’18, Cammy Primeau ’19, and Coel Reece ’20 and (2) Carver Bartz ’19,  Nathan Bui ’18, and Tanner Drabek ’18.

The teams were given 36 hours to develop mathematical models and write papers resolving how to design a drone light show for a community display or how to develop a Wasatch Mountain range into a ski resort and rank existing ski resorts.  The detailed problems are found here, and results are found here.
