Two Academy Teams Named Finalist in National & International Math Modeling Competitions

Two teams of Central Academy students earned impressive recognition for their performance in international math modeling competitions sponsored by COMAP (The Consortium for Math and its Applications).

TOP 8 AMONG U.S. TEAMS ON IMMC:

Most recently, 12th grader Maeve Greising, 11th grader, Kevin Li, and 10th grader Evan Hilton learned they had been named finalists in the 120-hour International Mathematical Modeling Challenge.  This challenge is open only to approximately the top 20% of teams that participated in the High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling.  Its goal is to provide students with a deeper experience both of how mathematics can explain our world and what working with mathematics looks like according to www.immchallenge.org.

The problem addressed by the team tasked them with determining the best location to hold an international meeting in order to maximize productivity.  The full question can be found here.

The finalist status placed this team in the top eight American teams – the top two US teams move on to compete against the top two teams from participating countries.

TOP 9% AMONG TEAMS GLOBALLY ON HiMCM:

Earlier in the semester, 12th graders Ryan Burgett and Connor Johnson and 11th graders Jimmy Le and Luke Whitman learned their team had been named finalists in the 20th annual High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM).  Finalist designation indicates this group placed between the top 2%-9% among 880 teams from around the globe (including 330 teams from the U.S.).

The 36-hour HiMCM contest requires teams to work together in a team setting to develop a mathematical model to solve a real-world problem.  The problem tackled by this team required them to develop a warehouse/distribution plan for a recreation equipment company that was expanding nationwide from the original New Hampshire location and wanted to provide one-day shipping to all continental states.  The full problem can be found here.
