World Food Prize Award Winner Discusses Innovation

Bram Grovaerts

Dr. Bram Govaerts, 2014 winner of Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application, spoke with students about his work to improve innovation, inspiration and intensification around sustainable agricultural practices.

“Agriculture is all about nature conservation,” he said.  Dr. Govaerts told students that understanding the science of the seed genome is only part of the solution.  “Letting a six year old drive your dream car on a gravel road will not lead to success.  If seed science is the dream car, it must also have good soil and farmers who understand how to drive it.”  He asked the students to consider how to use big data and networks to get solutions to the people who need it.  “It is our MORAL DUTY as researchers to bring pride back to the farmers.”
