8th Grade High School Credit Options:  Every 8th graders who earns an A or B for the semester will automatically get high school credit for the class.  However, if parents request it, we can also give credit for a C or not give credit for a B.  This document explains the pros and cons for either decision.  Parents have 2 weeks after grades come out to decide if they want us to change the automatic process for their child.  8th Grade Credit

AP Exam Registration: Students who are taking AP classes (usually 9 – 12 grade students) may start to register for the AP Exams on January 19.  See the attached document that explains how AP Exam registration works for DMPS students.  Out of District students who attend Academy classes order and pay for their AP Exams in the Central Academy office.  AP EXAM ORDERING

There were two presentations about preparing for transitions:

1) For 7th – 10th graders, Ms. Davis, GT Consultant, prepared Navigating High School and College Credits to explain how credits earned at Academy move students towards graduation, how to build your high school schedule and how DMACC, IB and AP courses earn college credit.

2) For 10th- 11th graders, Ms. Gogerty, Director, presented information from our counseling office on college application planning and preparation.  Handouts can be found here and on the Counseling tab.  An update on class rank in DMPS was also shared. Central Academy College Guide,  Parent Brag Sheet and Student Resume Builder, DMPS Class Rank Update  The College Guide was written by students, for students but it contain a lot of good advice.  The Parent Brag Sheet is used by Ms. Hilton to write letters of recommendation (most applications require a letter of recommendation from the school counselor).  Getting this submitted to her earlier helps her write unique recommendations for students and match them to opportunities that she discovers.  The Student Resume Builder is a good place to start both the application essay and to develop a resume to give to teachers when you ask them to write letters of recommendations.  Asking teachers as early as possible to write you a letter of recommendation and giving them a resume helps the teacher a lot!

Eighth Grade Academy Introduction

8th Grade Academy Orientation

JANUARY 2015

8th graders who earn A’s and B’s will automatically get High School credit and start their high school GPA.  But parents elect for their child to receive credit or not regardless of the student’s grade.  Notify Sandra.cloe@dmschools.org in writing by January 30, 2015 to change the high school credit options.  Parents can decide after they know the child’s semester grade.  Use this document to help you weigh your choices.

8th Grade High School Credit Options

AP Exam ordering starts January 16.  All exam ordering and payment takes place at the home high school, except for out of district Academy student and middle school students taking AP courses at Academy. Out of District and middle school students order and pay for exams in the Academy Main Office.

Test locations can also be confusing.  Most AP tests are given in the five comprehensive high schools (East, Hoover, Lincoln, North and Roosevelt)  even if the student takes the AP class at Academy.  There are exceptions, however.  See the attached document for a comprehensive list of exams dates, times and locations as well as details for ordering and paying for exams.
