Biography

Sherry has been with Central Academy since 2000, teaching American Literature, Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, and IB English. She received her MAT from the University of Iowa. Prior to teaching at Central Academy, Sherry taught four years at North High School. She has received the Who's Who Among American Teachers Award twice.

Biography

Jill Gilbert teaches 7th grade Prep Academy and 8th Grade English.  Prior to transferring to Central Academy in 2015, she taught 8th grade English and coached debate at McCombs Middle School.  She earned an M.A. in Education from Drake University, with endorsements in Secondary English, Middle School, and Gifted Education.  She also holds a B.A. in American Studies from Stanford University and an MBA in Marketing and Management from Columbia University.  Mrs. Gilbert entered her teaching career after working in management consulting, marketing, and product management for online and telecommunications companies.

Mrs. Gilbert is the mother of four children.  In her spare time, she enjoys reading, baking, and word games.   She and her children have entered the baking contests at the Iowa State Fair for the past ten years and have sponsored their own baking contest for children for the last four years.

Biography

Cate joined the Central Academy staff in 2007, teaching English 8 and English 9 and Speech and AP Language and Composition. She received her BA in Communication from Simpson College, and her masters from UNI. Previously, she taught at Meredith Middle School, Roosevelt High School, where she was Head Forensics Coach, and Hoover High School, where she served as assistant forensics and drama coach. Cate spent two years teaching in Japan with the Kofu/Des Moines Teacher Exchange and is the Assistant Director of the Kofu Exchange.  She is currently working toward an advanced degree in rhetoric.

Biography

Kristi Myers earned her BA in English and Secondary Education from Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL, and her MA in English Literature from Iowa State.  Prior to arriving at Central Academy, she taught middle school, high school, and college students.

Outside of school, Kristi enjoys trivia, camping, exercising, gardening, beekeeping, bird watching, and spending time with her family and friends.  She is also a lifelong, eternally optimistic Chicago Cubs baseball fan.

MeJa Pinkney

Biography

Ms. Pinkney earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, and she completed the Cameron Secondary Teacher Education Program.  Ms. Pinkney taught 9th, 10th, and 11th grade English in Lawton before relocating to Des Moines in 2005.  She has been a member of the Central Academy staff for ten years, and she teaches 8th grade English.  In addition to teaching 8th grade English at Central Academy, Ms. Pinkney also teaches Communications 703 at Central Campus.

Ms. Pinkney has a variety of interests outside of school.  Her main interest is music.  She is a drummer who has been in several hard rock bands and recorded three CDs.  She is also an avid concert goer.  Ms. Pinkney is also a sports enthusiast, and she is a jogger.  She also enjoys movies, board games, listening to music, traveling, cleaning, and spending time with her boyfriend, family, and friends.

Biography

Terri joined the Central Academy staff in 2011, teaching 8th and 9th grade English.  Previously she taught 9th grade English and Drama at Lincoln High School for five years. She received her BFA from Drake University and her MA from Simpson College.
